Church of Panagia Skepasti

In the village of Skepasti is the famous two-aisled church of Panagia tis Skepasti. The inscription on the southern wall of the temple places its foundation in 1592, mentioning the famous legend of the papaya that was kidnapped by pirates and donated money for its construction and miraculously returned to Cretan land. The legend captures pirate activity in Venetian-occupied Crete, with frequent looting and kidnapping of locals
